United drops segment-based status path for 2027, lifts Premier 1K to 32,000 PQPs

United will eliminate its flight-segment qualification path in 2027 for 2028 Premier status. Frequent flyers using that route face higher PQP targets, while the four-flight minimum stays.

Adapted for this edition

United Airlines will remove the flight-segment route to MileagePlus Premier status starting with 2027 qualification activity for 2028 status. Members will qualify through Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs), with Premier 1K rising to 32,000 PQPs from the current 28,000-point, PQP-only threshold.

Silver will require 6,000 PQPs, Gold 12,000 and Platinum 18,000—unchanged for members already qualifying on points alone. The bigger hit falls on frequent flyers who combine segments with lower spending: their current PQP thresholds are 5,000 for Silver, 10,000 for Gold, 15,000 for Platinum and 22,000 for 1K. Extra connections will no longer help meet those qualification targets.

One flight requirement survives. Members must still take at least four flights operated by United or United Express each year; partner flights do not satisfy that minimum. Canadian travellers pursuing MileagePlus rather than Aeroplan status should keep that distinction in mind when planning partner-heavy itineraries. This announcement concerns United qualification, not changes to Aeroplan or WestJet Rewards.

For US travellers, eligible United cobranded cards remain another way to earn PQPs. United also plans a 2027 head start for Premier members holding eligible cards: 300 PQPs for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum and 1,600 for 1K. Members who open an eligible card by Dec. 31 can also qualify for that deposit. Card earning rates and annual PQP caps vary, so compare those limits and fees before using spending to close a status gap.

Travellers in both countries should recalculate their 2027 qualification plans against the new thresholds, particularly if they previously relied on segments. Those weighing MileagePlus against Aeroplan, AAdvantage or SkyMiles should compare their expected flying and eligible spending—not assume that taking more flights will preserve their current United tier.
