How to use the Hilton Amex welcome offer without paying an annual fee

The US Hilton Honors Amex offers 70,000 points and a free night after US$2,000 in spending. Check eligibility, plan around the certificate’s expiry and use Silver status to stretch a longer award stay.

Hilton’s no-annual-fee American Express card can help cover a hotel stay, but the useful part is the redemption—not simply collecting the bonus. Here’s how to approach the offer.

1. Check the application terms first. The US offer lists 70,000 Hilton Honors points plus a free-night reward after US$2,000 in eligible spending within six months, for applications through January 13, 2027. Current and former holders of this specific card are excluded from the welcome offer under the supplied terms. Confirm the offer and eligibility with Amex before applying.

2. Keep the two countries’ products separate. Canadian travellers should not treat this as an Amex Membership Rewards Canada offer: check US-card eligibility before building a trip around it. The spending threshold is in USD, not CAD. Whether departing YYZ, YVR, YUL or YYC—or a major US hub—budget for flights separately. This card earns Hilton points, not Aeroplan, WestJet Rewards, MileagePlus, AAdvantage or SkyMiles, and not Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex MR US points.

3. Meet the threshold with planned purchases. Eligible Hilton spending earns seven points per US dollar; US restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations earn five; other eligible purchases earn three. Canadian purchases in those everyday categories do not qualify for the US-only bonus. The card charges no foreign transaction fee, though that does not eliminate currency conversion. Pay the balance in full so interest does not erode the reward.

4. Search before choosing a hotel. Use your Hilton Honors account and Hilton Points Explorer to shortlist properties, then check standard-room award availability for your dates. Compare the points requirement with the cash total in your budgeting currency. The source’s valuation puts 70,000 points at US$350, but that is an estimate—not a cash payout or guaranteed saving.

5. Track the free night separately. The certificate lasts 12 months from issuance; check its redemption conditions and availability before committing to flights. Its savings depend on the eligible room you actually book, not the highest advertised hotel rate.

6. Use Silver status for a longer points stay. The card includes Hilton Silver, which provides a fifth night free on eligible award stays. Search a five-night standard-room points booking to see the reduction; do not assume the separate free-night certificate counts toward it. Hilton also allows points pooling if your balance falls short.

Avoid spending US$20,000 solely to unlock Gold status without comparing alternatives. The no-fee card’s clearest uses are the welcome reward, the fifth-night benefit and fee-free foreign purchases—not guaranteed upgrades or breakfast.
