How to find United and ANA's C$516 Japan fare with a return to Canada

Search a multi-city itinerary from select US airports to Japan, returning to Ottawa or Montreal. The advertised C$516 fare includes taxes and bags, but getting to and from the airports costs extra.

Adapted for this edition

United and ANA have an advertised C$516 itinerary to Japan, including taxes, that starts in the US and ends in Ottawa or Montreal. It is not a conventional roundtrip: the savings depend on what you spend reaching the departure airport and getting home afterward.

1. Open Google Flights and choose multi-city. Enter Los Angeles (LAX)–Tokyo (TYO), then Tokyo–Ottawa (YOW) or Montreal (YUL). Other listed US starting points include Burlington, Syracuse, Boston, Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas, Seattle and San Diego. You can also try Osaka, Nagoya or Hiroshima instead of Tokyo.

2. Search select departures from mid-November through early December or January through February. Try Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays first. Sample combinations include November 17–December 3 and January 27–February 11; some returns run into March. The source does not specify travel years, so confirm the calendar before booking.

3. Select your dates, then check the Cheapest tab for an airline-direct booking option. Flights are operated by United or ANA, with one stop in each direction. The advertised basic-economy fare includes two checked bags and one carry-on; verify those allowances and the fare restrictions on the airline's checkout page.

4. Price the entire journey. Canadian travellers returning to YUL or YOW should add the cost of reaching the US airport. Travellers based in YYZ, YVR or YYC also need to budget for the trip home from Montreal or Ottawa. US travellers departing LAX or another listed airport must factor in a separate journey home from Canada. The quoted price is in CAD; check the actual USD total rather than treating it as US$516.

5. Compare cash and points before paying. If using Aeroplan, WestJet Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards Canada for positioning travel, check the separate booking's availability and costs. US travellers can similarly compare MileagePlus, AAdvantage, SkyMiles, Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex MR US options. This deal does not establish award availability or mileage earnings, and separately booked connections need a generous buffer.

The fare can lower the Japan ticket cost, but there is no fixed net saving once positioning is included. No booking deadline is listed; confirm the live price before committing to any separate travel.
