How to confirm an American business-class upgrade by September 30
Have an AAdvantage systemwide upgrade? Buy eligible premium economy and request the upgrade by September 30 to secure business class on select holiday departures, provided seats remain for sale.
American Airlines is temporarily letting AAdvantage members use systemwide upgrades to confirm business class whenever seats remain for sale—not just when dedicated upgrade inventory opens. The catch: you must buy premium economy and complete every step by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on September 30, 2026.
1. Check your AAdvantage account for an available systemwide upgrade, earned through Loyalty Point Rewards. No promotion registration is required. This offer uses an upgrade certificate, not a points transfer: Aeroplan, WestJet Rewards, MileagePlus, SkyMiles, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Canadian or US Amex Membership Rewards points are not substitutes.
2. Find an eligible departure from November 22–28, 2026, or December 20, 2026–January 1, 2027. Qualifying international flights must be marketed and operated by American, sell premium economy and connect the United States with Europe, South America or Asia. Select transcontinental routes also qualify. Flights to or from Hawaii, Auckland, Brisbane, Delhi, Sydney and Tel Aviv are excluded.
3. Compare the paid premium-economy fare with your alternatives before buying. Award tickets do not qualify. US travellers should check eligible flights from their preferred major US hub and compare costs in USD. Canadians starting at YYZ, YVR, YUL or YYC should price the trip in CAD, including any connection needed to reach the eligible US departure; a Canadian departure alone does not meet the listed route criteria.
4. Buy the eligible ticket and request your systemwide upgrade through American’s website, app or call centre before the deadline. American says it will confirm business class within a few hours if seats remain available for sale. Buying the ticket alone is not enough.
The practical benefit is earlier certainty and a business-class seat, rather than waiting for an upgrade to clear. There is no stated cash saving: premium economy may cost more than the economy ticket you would otherwise upgrade. Check business-class availability before paying, and do not treat the upgrade as secured until American confirms it.
