Before transferring points, check partner awards for a cheaper domestic flight

A partner loyalty program may charge fewer points for the same flight. Compare available seats, transfer options and the full cash cost before moving credit card rewards.

Adapted for this edition

An expensive domestic award is worth checking through a partner airline’s loyalty program before you book. The same flight may cost fewer points elsewhere—but only if the operating airline releases seats to that partner. Distance-based pricing does not guarantee the lowest price.

1. Find your baseline. Search your airline’s site and record the points required, cash charges and cabin. Canadian travellers can start with Aeroplan or WestJet Rewards; US travellers can check MileagePlus, AAdvantage or SkyMiles. Compare the cash ticket too, using C$ for Canadian pricing and US$ for US pricing.

2. Search a relevant partner. Create or sign into the loyalty account you would use to book. Check British Airways or Qatar Airways Avios for eligible Oneworld flights, or Aeroplan for eligible Star Alliance flights. Search your actual departure airport, whether that is YYZ, YVR, YUL, YYC or a major US hub. Alliance membership alone does not guarantee award availability; do not assume WestJet flights appear in these searches.

3. Compare the complete offer. Match the date, flight and cabin, then check points, taxes, fees and cancellation terms. Partner pricing can vary, and a seat available through the operating airline may be unavailable to partners. If nothing appears, try another departure time or date.

4. Verify your transfer path before moving rewards. Canadians should check Amex Membership Rewards Canada’s current partners; US travellers should check Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards US. Transfer options differ by country. Confirm the ratio and timing: transfers generally cannot be reversed, and seats can disappear while points move.

5. Book through the partner once the points arrive. The potential saving is fewer points for the same seat—not necessarily a better cabin or lower cash charges. Transfer only when the available award and full cost beat your original option.
