Aeroplan’s best value shifts to fixed-price partners as United awards vary
United awards no longer guarantee Aeroplan’s chart rates. Fixed-price partners still offer strong value, including ANA business class for 55,000 points—if you can find availability.
The key to getting value from Aeroplan is now distinguishing a fixed award price from a starting rate. Air Canada and select partners, including United, Emirates and Etihad, use variable pricing. Most other partners retain distance- and region-based rates, making them the more predictable targets for your points.
For Canadian travellers, that means an Air Canada departure from Toronto (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR), Montreal (YUL) or Calgary (YYC) needs a live price check—not just a glance at the chart. Short flights of up to 500 miles, such as Montreal–Washington Dulles, start at 6,000 points in economy, but Air Canada and United seats can cost more. United’s shift removes the certainty of that starting price for US travellers, too.
The strongest opportunities remain on fixed-price partners. Qualifying East Coast–Western Europe itineraries cost 60,000 points one-way in business class; longer West Coast journeys can cost 75,000. Distance bands and partner award availability determine what you can actually book.
For Asia, ANA’s Seattle–Tokyo Haneda flight illustrates the upside: at just under 5,000 miles, it costs 55,000 Aeroplan points one-way in business class when partner space is available. That is a concrete target for US travellers and Canadians who can reach Seattle, though adding a connecting flight can change the distance band and price.
Aeroplan adds no carrier-imposed surcharges, but partner bookings carry a C$39 fee per ticket, approximately US$28, plus taxes and third-party charges. That fee matters more on a short economy flight than on a long-haul business-class redemption. Compare the total with a cash fare before booking.
An eligible stopover costs another 5,000 points and can last up to 45 days, with one allowed per one-way itinerary. Stopovers cannot be in Canada, the US or China. This can make a multi-city partner award more useful than a simple return trip.
Canadian readers can transfer Amex Membership Rewards Canada points to Aeroplan at 1:1. US readers have 1:1 options through Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards US, Capital One and Bilt. For United flights, compare Aeroplan’s live quote with MileagePlus rather than assuming either program wins. These Aeroplan opportunities do not establish a corresponding benefit for WestJet Rewards, AAdvantage or SkyMiles balances.
The US-issued Chase Aeroplan card also offers a 15% discount on eligible award directions flown entirely by Air Canada, Air Canada Express or Air Canada Rouge. Its US$195 annual fee means the discount deserves a spending-and-travel calculation; it does not reduce ANA or United award prices.
Verdict: act when you find a suitable fixed-price partner seat, but wait to transfer flexible points until you confirm availability and the full cost. There is no blanket reason to rush into a variable-price Air Canada or United redemption.
